From 1950 to 1959 Alfa Romeo produced the 1900 series designed by Orazio Satta Puglia. The notchback saloon Berlina formed the basis for the various other models such as coupés, convertibles and the like. The popular family car for the high-income middle class was the first new development after the Second World War and at the same time the first series with a self-supporting body.
The practical car scored not only with its low price, but also with its dynamic performance. A 1.9-litre 4-cylinder engine with an overhead chain-driven camshaft delivered 80 hp. In 1954 Alfa Romeo drilled out the engine for the 1900 Super to nearly two liters, the performance was now 90 hp. Even more power was shown by the Turismo Internazionale, the 1900ti, whose basic version already had 100 hp, in the Super version even 115 hp. The automobile manufacturer sold 17,390 units of the successful 1900 model, 1095 of which were in the ti version. Alfa Romeo manufactures the extended Lunga and the two-door Primavera in small quantities for representation. A special feature was the 1951 military built A. R. 51 Matta, an all-wheel drive off-roader that could even climb stairs. The 1952 Disco Volante with its science fiction-inspired form seemed somewhat eccentric. It was to become the vehicle of the future, but never went beyond the experimental stage. The futuristic B. A. T., Alfa Romeo Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica was a different version of the 1900s, which never went into production. The car was designed by Franco Scaglione, the successor of Disco Volante, in collaboration with the coachbuilder Bertone.
